- Consumer products, Interior components, Industrial components
Overview
Wood-fiber reinforced thermoplastics combine natural wood fibers with conventional, recycled, or bio-based polymer matrices.
With appropriate fiber treatment and compounding, wood fibers can be incorporated into thermoplastic materials intended for established plastics-processing methods such as injection moulding and extrusion.
This material category is relevant to SannEco through previous practical experience supporting the development and commercialization of modified wood-fiber compounds in China and Taiwan.
Material Systems
Modified wood fibers can be evaluated with different thermoplastic matrices depending on the intended application and processing requirements.
Relevant systems can include:
- Polypropylene (PP)
- Polyethylene (PE)
- ABS
- Selected engineering plastics
- Selected bio-based or biodegradable polymers
The suitability of any combination depends on the fiber technology, polymer grade, formulation, processing conditions, and required product performance.
Development Considerations
Introducing natural fibers into thermoplastics requires more than replacing a percentage of the polymer with fiber.
Important considerations can include:
- Fiber-to-polymer compatibility
- Fiber loading
- Moisture management and drying
- Fiber dispersion
- Processing temperature
- Flow characteristics
- Mechanical requirements
- Surface appearance
- Dimensional stability
- Downstream manufacturing requirements
The appropriate compound therefore needs to be developed around the intended polymer, production process, and application.
Local Compounding
For a European material supplier entering China or Taiwan, local compounding can create a practical route between the original material technology and downstream manufacturers.
A typical development path is:
European material → Asian compounder → formulation and processing trials → validated compound → downstream application
The material supplier contributes knowledge of the fiber technology, while the compounder contributes formulation, polymer, additive, and processing expertise.
SannEco’s Role
SannEco can support this development process by:
- Identifying suitable compounding partners
- Coordinating samples and technical documentation
- Supporting communication between the material supplier and compounder
- Coordinating development trials
- Supporting evaluation of potential applications
- Connecting validated material solutions with relevant commercial partners
SannEco does not independently formulate compounds or operate a material-testing laboratory. Formulation development and testing are performed by qualified technical partners.
Relevant Experience
The experience behind SannEco includes previous professional work supporting modified wood-fiber materials and local compounding development in Asian markets.
This experience was developed through previous work with Biofiber Tech Sweden AB and predates SannEco.
